through
the
storm
Maela Allen
Basketball flowed through my veins for as long as I can remember. As a child, it was all that I cared about. I was the starting varsity point guard as a freshman and traveled the country playing AAU. But starting in 10th grade, I tore three ACLs in three years. I only played 12 total games of basketball after my freshman year. The sport that defined me was snatched away. My basketball innocence vanished.

People would always tell me that I had so much free time now; I should try different things and develop new interests. They weren’t wrong, but I hated hearing this. I couldn’t shake the love I had for the game. “Do this instead… focus on this…,” useless advice. I was angry. I was sad. I was in the middle of the storm.

I decided to lean into the storm. I started coaching, training, mentoring, and designing clothes that symbolize a hoop mindset. I made it to the other side. My hoop mindset brought me back.

“Through the storm" is more than a phrase – it defines my journey. Adversity shaped who I am. Basketball taught me that setbacks don’t define you; your response does. Pushing through challenging moments builds discipline, confidence, and strength that extend beyond the game. Whether it’s an injury, a challenge, or an internal struggle, the storm is part of the growth process. On the other side, you discover who you are meant to be.

Go through the storm.

Develop your hoop mindset.
